Virtual ISP blog / sharedzilla.com

October 26, 2008, 03:22 PM
We had few reports about sharedzilla.com not working. After investigation i notice: domain hosted by two DNS servers
208.72.170.11
208.72.170.10

rich ~ # whois 208.72.170.11

OrgName: McColo Corporation
OrgID: MCCOL

We had to block whole ip range of McColo, cause of their abuse requests ignorance. Many customers in Lebanon got infected by various bots, and this bots sending private information of customers to this hosting. This is not because of this specific website.
Here you can read about McColo (search by word McColo):

Okay talking about abuse, if I may mention an issue concerning the Fair User Policy. It is there to ensure that the company's resources are routed fairly evenly. Yet it seems that this policy ensures the company's integrity and maybe needs to be a bit more dynamic in its interaction with the users. I am a heavy user, I download much, and it's like a sin to download :-S I mean storage capacities have increased over the past few years so did file sizes and transmission speeds, so everything out there is really heavy, and in case it happens that someone has many interests this becomes trouble. So why not to create an interface where users can monitor their usage rate so that, us users, can help not to infringe the FUP without risking sudden interruptions in our connectivity.
Then comes the MAC address security, everytime my router is struck by lightning and I upload my old MAC to it, my account is disabled. I feel ashamed, I feel that I am the bad guy destroying the network. I'm not :-s I understand that we live in a third world country and that not everybody can afford connection, plus no cyber laws are available, so trespasses are on the loose. So implementing a two way FUP (fair for the customer and the user) will help us all distinguish good guys from bad guys :-)

Be it an official or unofficial blog, communication is always a good idea :-)

The biggest trouble, that backbone prices is not decreasing anymore in Lebanon significally. All better deals - it is just result of customers amount growth (so expenses is dropping, when there is more customers). But still, ISP's forced to have tight rules (FUP, limits, etc), to not become bankrupts, and to try to follow world prices. I am strongly recommending to leave all downloads to "night time" (00:00 - 09:00). At this time there is plenty bandwidth free and it will not hurt anybody. And it doesn't matter how much you download at night, FUP will not be applied, if big amount of downloads at night only. Regarding MAC address security, it is somehow obsolete, but restriction exists, because of many reasons. One of them - resellers often put too simple passwords for users. Another - it is just protection from people, who think they are too clever. We can make anyway "post-analysis" of data, and block such violations, but better to prevent them. It is just locking your account to 3-way handshake - username+password+MAC. Account is not blocked, it is just need "MAC reset" procedure, so your new MAC will be detected and then account will be locked to new mac. If user suddently tried to login from another MAC - it is not a crime, he will just get "password invalid", and he can still login from valid MAC . But some users think they are clever, and trying to run two routers with same MAC. Such things is detected, but not realtime. Accounts will be locked permanently on such kind of "abuse" after while. I know, that my explanations is not so clear (mainly because of my English), but you can ask here explanation about this specific things.

And I hope I did not infringe the blog rules, for my intent is not to raise a personal problem, yet an issue of general importance.

Yeah I understand ... About that MAC thing and users who think they are too clever, it might be that, yet sometimes you know electricity in lebanon, it fails daily. When power goes down, and you have no alternate source but the battery of your laptop, you are forced to unplug the cable from the router and plug it in the computer and here you go this is labeled as abuse, but the intent of such user would only be to use his own account legally ... :-)

This thing is allowed, and i fully understand you, i had same issues before. Not allowed is to use at same time account, or different places. Btw, you can get a battery charger, small battery (like for motorcycle, or light), and check how much is your router power supply voltage. If it is 6V or 12V - Yuppi, you can use battery directly, but dont let it become "dry". And you can have wireless "on" If other voltage (9V, 16V or other) - simple schematics can let you "lower down" voltage for small devices. I dont remember exact name of parts, but if you need - i can give schematics.

You know that's a clever idea, i will try that thx!

Just be careful with voltage and polarity. For protection from lightening - also good idea to get surge protector. But this thing kinda complicated, you need good ground and etc. I will try to find links about that and post on blog. I know many people, who lost their laptops and computers because of lightening.

Hawk October 28, 2008, 11:04 PM
Yeah, that's why I avoid using my laptop's or any motherboard built-in ethernet port. And btw there are cheap commercial, ready to use surge protectors, I should try one of those
VISP NOC October 28, 2008, 11:06 PM
Most of them are useless, if you dont have proper "ground wire". But if you have, yes, better to have them. Especially good is from APC.

Hawk October 28, 2008, 11:19 PM
One needs to plan his own home electricity and foresee a grounding .. quite unlikely in commercial housing here in lebanon. I think I will preview that when it will be time to build my own house :-) for now, we'll see how to manage hehe. Anyways, I'll go grab something for dinner, have a nice evening
